Understanding the Nervous System for Midlife Women

Understanding Somatic Regulation for Midlife Women

Somatic regulation is the use of body-based practices to support emotional wellbeing
and help regulate the nervous system.

Rather than relying only on thoughts or insight, somatic approaches use awareness of the body, breath, movement, posture, touch, and sensory experiences to increase feelings of safety,

resilience, and connection.

Nervous system regulation is the practice of helping your body find greater balance, flexibility, and resilience.

Rather than staying stuck in cycles of chronic stress, overwhelm, or exhaustion, regulation supports your ability to respond to life's challenges and return to a sense of safety and steadiness. During midlife, hormonal changes, cumulative stress, trauma, caregiving, and burnout can all influence how the nervous system functions. Through evidence-informed approaches—including restorative rest, mindful movement, breath awareness, somatic practices, time in nature, and healthy relationships—you can strengthen your nervous system's capacity to adapt, recover, and support your overall wellbeing.

Your Body Is Part of the Conversation

Thoughts matter—but so does your body. Somatic practices invite you to notice breathing, muscle tension, posture, movement, and physical sensations as valuable sources of information. Learning to listen to your body can help you respond to stress with greater awareness, flexibility, and self-compassion.
